The Ecomapuá REDD project preserves around 90,000 hectares of the Amazon rainforest on Marajó Island, at the mouth of the Amazon River. By making it more economically advantageous to protect the area, rather than open it up to logging – a major cause of deforestation in the region – logging activities have now ceased. In addition to conserving the rich biodiversity of the Amazon, the project aims to promote alternative sources of income for local communities. For example, people can gain access to finance and training to cultivate acai berries in a sustainable way. The project will reduce an estimated 1.5m tonnes of CO2 emissions by 2032.

Supporting the sustainable production of acai berries helps to improve food security for the local community and creates a viable alternative to felling trees.
