The Pamir Hydro Plant harnesses Tajikistan’s natural water resources to provide clean, reliable energy to some 254,000 people, avoiding the need for costly, polluting diesel generators. The project is leveraging carbon finance to add two 7MW turbines to its run-of-river hydroelectric power station, which further contributes 94,000 MWh into the grid. Previously, diesel generators often failed in winter, forcing schools, health clinics and businesses to close. Now, the region has uninterrupted power, and is also exporting electricity to Afghanistan. The project is saving 50,000 tonnes of CO2 annually, and employing nearly 900 people. Meanwhile, families are no longer cooking on open fires and rudimentary stoves.

“It is impossible to imagine surgery without electricity. Until recently, in remote areas of Afghanistan, doctors could not imagine working with equipment that was only available in Kabul,” recalls Dr Hojifaiz of Bashor Medical Centre. “Simple operations were impossible. Many, many people, especially children, died. Today we can diagnose with confidence and carry out effective treatment.”
