This project improves the lives of smallholder farmers in Vietnam by enabling them to convert animal manure into biogas for cooking, lighting and hot water. Typically located in remote, rural areas, the biogas plants allow farmers to store manure in sealed tanks, where it breaks down to release biogas. This avoids the need to collect wood fuel from local forests, and provides a clean, reliable and cost-effective source of power. By 2018, the project will support 180,000 biogas plants, reaching more than 840,000 people across Vietnam. The plants are designed to last for at least 20 years, while building and maintaining them creates jobs for local people.

Women save 2.4 hours per day by avoiding the need to collect wood for fuel, allowing them to devote more time to income-generating or leisure activities.

The biogas plants have created at least 2,600 permanent jobs in rural areas.

By displacing wood fuel, each biogas plant saves approximately 4.86 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. Additionally, the use of animal manure in biogas systems prevents the release of methane (a greenhouse gas) into the atmosphere.

Replacing wood fuel with biogas lowers deforestation in local forests. Farmers also use the bio-slurry (a by‐product from biogas production) to help improve soil fertility.
